Finding My Voice

Whatever happened to the days when I blasted the music while I was in the shower? Did I stop when I had the baby, so I didn’t wake her up? Or was it sometime before that? Somehow my rock, pop and dance music CDs were replaced with upbeat kids tunes and lullabies and inspirational books on CD to help me get over my divorce. These later became yoga therapy and psychology lectures to help me study for exams.

Through my daughter’s music lessons, I discovered soul fish and started learning – or maybe relearning – the do-re-me scale. I’m enjoying trying to hit the right notes. I’m also working on my ujjayi breathing in my yoga practice – the victorious breath. That’s what I need – to be victorious in my own life.

I encourage everyone to rediscover something from their past that made them feel good. Blast the music in the shower. Sing in your car at the top of your lungs while using the steering wheel as a drum. Dance around your house, hips and arms flaying, spinning in circles. Have a night of laughter with your friends. Call up an old friend and have a chat. I’m sure they’d love to hear from you.

I decided to take my own advice and track down a friend that has been in and out of my life for the last 26 years. Every time we find each other, our friendship is rekindled, and it’s just like old times. We never lived in the same city together, but became friends by writing letters back and forth. Now with the magic of the Internet, I was able to track her down in Ireland, and with the magic of Skype, we were able to see each other and catch up on what’s been happening in our lives over the last couple of years since we last talked. I think I’ll be making a Skype call to Ireland on a regular basis.

In music we learned that we have four channels – whispering, talking, singing and shouting. Try one you haven’t done in awhile and see how it feels.

Hi Lisa and Friends,

Lisa, I loved your idea about involving your daughter in a task which is otherwise a chore. I think, most importantly, this shows how we can affect change by changing the way we view things. By refocusing on our priorities (family, time together, health) that 'chore' we hardly have time for becomes a valuable way to spend our time. Yoga offers us this wonderful opportunity to be able to refocus the lens on things. We become deeply tuned into our 'inner selves', our values, our priorities. We then affect change from this source. How authentic. Thank-you for reminding us of that.



Caesar Salad with a Lesson on the Side

I do a lot of things in the morning in order to organize my day. Sometimes I feel like I already worked half a day by the time I get to work in the morning. I had thought about doing things in the evening instead, but my evenings were spent doing homework and reading with my daughter and getting her ready for bed. By the time that was done, I really didn’t want to start making lunches and planning out meals for the next day.

One day I decided to involve my daughter in some of the tasks by taking her to the grocery store and letting her choose some healthy foods for her meals and snacks. She picked out a Caesar salad to have with dinner that night, as well as some other food. Then I involved her in making dinner. She added what she wanted to the Caesar salad – croutons, grated parmesan cheese, sunflower seeds and pineapple, no dressing. It was delicious!

She continues to make the Caesar salad each time we’re having it. I wash and cut everything, and then I sit down at the table. She plays restaurant by taking our orders, making our Caesar salad to our preferred tastes, and then brings it to the table for each person. One little change to our routine changed a lot for both of us. We did something together, I didn’t have to decide what to make, she took ownership over her creation, and we all enjoyed something new.



Goal Setting

We had a lovely time on our Yoga, Pilates and Nature Weekend. While we were all sitting around the campfire, a day of self discovery behind us, one of our participants came up with a great exercise to get us all thinking and talking. I thought I’d start this blog in order to help us stay on track with the goals that we set, and also to help me work on one of my goals – to do more writing. I invite all of you, whether you joined us on the retreat, or you are just taking the time to read this, to answer the questions below, share your progress, and help support everyone in meeting their goals.

Here are the three questions to ask yourself:

1. What do you want to stop doing?

2. What do you want to start (or restart) doing?

3. What do you want to continue doing?

I, personally, would like to stop always saying yes to everything. Or to turn it into a positive, I would like to find my voice. One person has already shared resources with me on how to do this, but I’m open to hearing other suggestions.

I would like to start improving my French. I started the program Rosetta Stone awhile back, but stopped doing it when I went back to university part-time. (We always seem to be starting and stopping something.) I'd like to get back to doing this. I would also like to work on my writing, so I thought I’d start with a reason to write by having this blog. My first step for both of these goals was to peruse a magazine called “France”, so that I could gain some inspiration from the country that always inspired me.

The last question was what will you continue doing? It doesn’t always have to be starting and stopping something. Continuing is always an option. I’m going to continue spending time with my family. I’m trying to reprioritize, so that my time is spent in positive, appreciative and creative ways.
